In Aberoth, players begin as a nameless prisoner held by an Orc army. You must then find a way to escape to the Newbie Field. This is where players can learn the basics. You will eventually meet the NPC Inala who will be first to provide information and assistance to your character in surviving in the world of Aberoth.
Eventually, you will be able to become a Champion. This requires having at least 1 gold coin. By becoming a champion, the character will now respawn in the Recovery Room (instead of starting over from the beginning). The player will also be able to create a specific name for the character.
Furthermore, a Champion can start learning skills. Skills in Aberoth are necessary for performing most tasks, such as weapon skills (Axe, Blunt, Dagger, and Shield), survival (Life, Bind Wounds, Drinking), or spellcasting (Magic and Spell).
Because Aberoth uses 8-bit graphics, the world does not use instancing. The maps are persistent, as well as the NPCs and creatures that populate them. PVP is also a fixture, thus players will have to be wary of traveling too far, lest they be attacked by bandit player characters. Aberoth also features monster taming, structure building, and unrestricted trading mechanics.
