Guild Wars Description
Guild Wars is the long-time action roleplaying massively multiplayer online game that takes players in the world of Tyria. All the standalone games (Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall) represent different campaigns occurring at roughly the same time in different parts of Tyria. Players in Guild Wars take on the roles of heroes, fighting to prevent the malevolent forces from bringing the world into an age of chaos.
Players create their avatars in Guild Wars with the intent of playing them for campaign or for PVP purposes. Unlike other MMORPGs, Guild Wars allow players to create PVP-only characters that are already at max level, but these cannot be used for the campaign mode. Players then choose from a number of professions, with one primary profession and can acquire a secondary profession during gameplay (for campaign characters).
In Prophecies, players can select the Warrior, Ranger, Monk, Necromancer, Mesmer, and Elementalist professions. The Factions campaign adds the Assassin and Ritualist, and Nightfall added the Paragon and Dervish professions. Only players who own the appropriate campaign can access the professions (as they can only be applied if they begin in the locations of Cantha and Elona). Professions determine the abilities their avatars will have access to during the course of the game.
Playing in the campaign can be done for solo play or with a group of other players, Guild Wars also has the option of having NPCs such as henchmen and heroes join the players' parties. All characters have a maximum level of 20, with additional quests that can add 30 attribute points (for a total of 200 points). Adventuring through the campaigns of Guild Wars can be done by parties of 4-8 members, although Elite missions can accommodate up to 12 players.
PVP options in Guild Wars is varied, with modes like Random Arenas which has varying winning conditions such as deathmatches and kill totals, Codex Arena, Heroes Ascent, Guild Battles, Alliance Battles, and Hero Battles. There are also tournaments open for guilds to build their faction reputation.
