What We Show

We surface two core metrics for each game:

  • Estimated Players (30‑day Avg) — a smoothed daily player estimate derived from monthly aggregates. This drives rankings across the site.
  • Players Today — a fresh, same‑day estimate using the latest available signals.

Primary Data Sources

  • Reddit — subreddit subscribers and activity snapshots for each game.
  • Steam — concurrent players (CCU) for Steam‑mapped titles.
  • Twitch — viewers for game‑mapped categories.

We also use trusted, curated game metadata (e.g., platform presence) to interpret signals appropriately.

How We Combine Signals

Our enhanced estimates blend the sources above in a tier‑aware framework. In short:

  • When Steam CCU is current, we estimate daily active players by accounting for the share of PC players on Steam and, for multi‑platform titles, the typical PC share of total players.
  • When Steam is missing or stale, we use a multi‑signal model based on Reddit activity, Twitch, and recent momentum.
  • We apply guardrails and smoothing to reduce one‑off spikes and ensure changes are meaningful.

Monthly vs Daily Views

  • 30‑day Avg (site‑wide default) comes from monthly aggregates; it’s stable and comparable between games.
  • Players Today reflects the latest 24‑hour inputs and can move more quickly.

Ranking

Rankings use the Estimated Players (30‑day Avg) metric. The Year page ranks games by their average of monthly 30‑day averages within the selected year; this can differ from the Home/List pages, which use the current month.

Validation

We routinely back‑test estimates against known reference points and adjust tier assumptions and mappings as needed. We prioritize consistency, transparency about inputs, and responsible presentation.
